On Wednesday afternoon, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced it will reduce the number of flights at Newark Liberty International Airport.
This is due to problems with air traffic control and ongoing construction work.
Starting now, the airport will allow no more than 56 takeoffs and landings per hour—28 arrivals and 28 departures.
This limit may change based on weather or other conditions.
The FAA’s decision follows several incidents at the airport, including one where controllers lost radio and radar contact with planes for 90 seconds.
The move comes after weeks of flight cancellations and delays caused by a shortage of air traffic controllers and runway construction.
28/22 News reporter Amelia Sack spoke with travel experts in northeastern Pennsylvania about what travelers can expect.
This announcement arrives just before the summer travel season, meaning many passengers will likely experience the impact.
Flight reductions at Newark Airport are set to begin just before Memorial Day weekend, one of the busiest travel times of the year.
