Penang Hotels See Booming Business After Visa-Free Travel with China

by Mary

Since the introduction of visa-free travel between Malaysia and China in December 2023, many hotels in Penang have experienced a significant surge in business, with industry experts predicting even further growth as the policy continues.

Tony Goh, chairman of the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang chapter, stated that the arrival of Chinese tourists has provided a much-needed boost to the local hotel industry, especially after the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chinese tourists typically book stays of two to three days in three- to five-star hotels, often traveling with family or friends instead of in large tour groups. According to Goh, this influx of tourists has led to double-digit growth for most hotels since December 2023.

“Without this influx of Chinese nationals, hotels would be suffering,” he said.

Currently, Malaysians can travel to China without a visa until December 31 of this year, while Chinese nationals can visit Malaysia visa-free until December 31 of next year. Last month, the visa-free travel period was extended for an additional five years, allowing citizens of both countries to stay for up to 90 days over a six-month period.
