Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of UN Tourism, extended a warm welcome as Vienna joined the International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO). He noted that Vienna’s commitment to sustainability through this global initiative will not only benefit individual businesses but also significantly boost the overall well – being of the destination.
Norbert Kettner, CEO of Vienna Tourist Board, emphasized that the Sustainable Tourism Observatory in Vienna will drive dialogue, innovation, and collective stewardship. This will enable co – creation of sustainable destination development, ensuring tourism improves life quality for all while safeguarding the city’s unique cultural and natural assets.
Vienna’s entry into INSTO aligns with the launch of its comprehensive Visitor Economy Strategy. This strategy sets a global benchmark for integrating sustainability into long – term tourism planning, balancing the needs of residents and visitors, responsibly managing resources, and prioritizing quality of life. The Sustainable Tourism Observatory is key to implementing this strategy and supports Vienna’s broader goals in the Smart Climate City Strategy and Vienna 2030 – Economy and Innovation location strategy. It enhances Vienna’s standing as a sustainable and innovative travel destination both at home and abroad.
INSTO, an initiative by UN Tourism, aids destinations in monitoring tourism’s economic, environmental, and social impacts. By promoting evidence – based decision – making, it ensures the long – term sustainability and resilience of the tourism industry.
