Wyoming 130 Through Snowy Range Reopens for Summer Travel

by Mary

The seasonally closed section of Wyoming Highway 130 through the Snowy Range officially reopened for the summer, the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) announced Thursday.

Work on the 12-mile stretch of this scenic byway began in mid-May. Crews from Laramie and Saratoga led the effort, with additional support from teams in Casper and Cheyenne. The reopening was targeted for Memorial Day weekend.

Although the mountain pass is now open to traffic, WYDOT warns travelers to remain cautious. Severe weather, including spring snowstorms, can still occur at higher elevations.

“Conditions may be impassable overnight,” said Eric Anderson, WYDOT District 1 Area Maintenance Supervisor. “Travelers should take their time and be aware there may still be road hazards.”

Wyoming 130 reaches an elevation of 10,800 feet and is one of several high mountain roads in Wyoming that close each year during late fall. The closures happen because deep snow and low traffic make plowing impractical. Last year, the road closed for winter on November 19.
