China’s decision to extend visa-free travel to all six Gulf Cooperation Council countries has sparked enthusiasm across the region’s tourism and business sectors. The policy expansion, announced May 28 and effective June 9, now includes Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman – completing coverage of the GCC after initially applying to the UAE and Qatar since 2018. Industry leaders anticipate this will significantly increase travel flows and economic exchanges between China and the Gulf states.
Tourism professionals report immediate positive impacts, with Bahrain’s Ibn Firnas Travel already seeing increased inquiries from Chinese clients. “This removes a major barrier for Gulf travelers,” said company MD Fatima Ahmed, noting China’s appeal as a diverse destination requiring minimal marketing. The Association of Bahrain Travel and Tour Agents is coordinating with airlines to develop competitive pricing packages catering to different budget levels, recognizing China’s vast array of travel experiences from luxury to budget-friendly options.
Business leaders view the policy as a strategic masterstroke that will accelerate economic cooperation. Kuwaiti consultant Khaled Mahdi called it “a genius move” that enhances people-to-people diplomacy while supporting Gulf economic visions like Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. The timing proves particularly opportune as China’s inbound tourism shows strong recovery, reaching 97% of pre-pandemic levels with $94.2 billion in visitor spending during 2024.
Experts highlight the policy’s multifaceted benefits, from educational exchanges targeting the Gulf’s youth population to facilitating business collaborations. Dubai-based strategist Peggy Li emphasizes the importance of youth exchange programs, while analysts note the move strengthens China’s position within BRICS and its growing ties with the strategically vital Gulf region. As travel barriers dissolve, anticipation builds for deeper cultural understanding and economic integration between China and the GCC nations.
