A 57-year-old man from Devon, England, who was arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a fellow passenger on a cruise ship has been released on bail. According to a police statement obtained by PEOPLE, the suspect was detained by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary after a fatal altercation on the MSC Virtuosa.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, shortly after the ship departed from Southampton. The victim, a 60-year-old man from West Sussex, was reportedly part of a bachelor party on board. The suspect was arrested at Southampton Docks and released on bail on Tuesday, May 6, while investigations continue.
Authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information about the altercation to come forward. The cruise ship returned to Southampton on Monday, May 5, after a two-night stop in Bruges, Belgium.
MSC Cruises issued a statement saying they are cooperating fully with the investigation and providing support to those affected. The MSC Virtuosa has a capacity of 6,334 guests and a crew of 1,704 members.
