As temperatures rise, thousands of redbud trees have burst into full bloom across Chicheng Mountain in Tiantai County, Zhejiang Province, attracting swarms of visitors. Early-morning hikers meander along trails flanked by the vibrant blossoms, creating a picturesque spring scene.
A Mountain Steeped in History
Standing 306.5 meters tall, Chicheng Mountain—locally nicknamed “Burning Mountain” for its distinctive reddish cliffs—lies northwest of Tiantai County, just 2 kilometers from the ancient Guoqing Temple built during the Sui Dynasty. Its striking crimson slopes, described by poets as “defying the common hues of mountains and rising abruptly from flat land,” contrast dramatically with surrounding emerald peaks.
The Legendary “Chicheng Rosy Clouds”
At dawn or dusk, when mist swirls around the mountainside bathed in golden light, the boundary between crimson cliffs and rosy clouds blurs, transforming the peak into what locals call a “Buddhist fairyland wrapped in rainbows.” This phenomenon, known as “Chicheng Rosy Clouds,” ranks among China’s four great natural wonders alongside the “Moonlit Sea,” “Wushan Clouds,” and “Xiangjiang Rain.”
Cultural Legacy in Bloom
Historically lending its name to the entire Taizhou region (once called Chicheng Prefecture), the mountain has inspired poets for centuries. Now in March, its slopes dazzle anew as pink blossoms frame the ancient Liangfei Pagoda. Visitors capture photos amidst the floral tapestry or stroll leisurely through fragrant corridors of flowers.
