The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel advisory urging Americans to avoid traveling to Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza due to increased threats of terrorism, civil unrest, and armed conflict.
Tensions continue to rise in the region, particularly as fighting between Israel and Iran intensifies. In response, the State Department has advised travelers to steer clear of the area.
In Jacksonville, the Jewish Community Alliance (JCA) was preparing to lead a group to Israel as part of the Myron Flagler Israel Learning Seminar. The program, organized in partnership with several local Jewish organizations, allows staff from those groups—regardless of religious background—to study the history and culture of Israel for a year, ending with a trip to the country.
Adam Chaskin, CEO of the JCA, explained that the group began its studies in January 2024 and originally planned to travel in December. Due to violence in the region at that time, the trip was postponed to June. However, just hours before their scheduled departure, the situation in Israel worsened.
“Less than 12 hours before we were supposed to fly out, the current situation erupted,” said Chaskin. “It was no longer safe for us to travel.”
The trip was officially canceled just days before the State Department issued its advisory. Chaskin emphasized that the seminar is more than just a tour—it’s an in-depth educational journey.
“By spending the year studying, going back thousands of years through modern history to the founding of Israel and up to today, we’re giving people that foundation,” he said. “Ending with the trip to Israel allows people to experience firsthand what they’ve learned. It really leaves a lasting impact.”
Despite the cancellation, Chaskin said the organization remains committed to providing meaningful learning opportunities and hopes to reschedule the visit when conditions improve.
