China’s national railway system saw a notable rise in passenger volumes during the first four months of 2025, with 1.46 billion trips recorded — up 5.9% compared to the same period in 2024. Daily operations averaged 11,224 passenger trains, marking a 7.1% increase year-on-year.
The growth reflects China Railway’s efforts to optimize routes, focusing on tourism and health travel, including eco-wellness and silver economy markets targeting older travelers.
International rail travel also rebounded strongly, with 5.69 million foreign passengers using the network from January to April, a 32.1% increase year-on-year, signaling restored international confidence and enhanced cross-border connectivity.
Adjustments to route planning and capacity continue to support seasonal peaks and regional tourism, integrating high-speed rail as a core element of China’s broader travel and tourism strategy.
