Tourism is one of Oregon’s leading economic drivers, and guided tours—especially those led by fishing guides and outdoor outfitters—play a key role in both the visitor experience and the use of natural resources.
However, managing the balance between growing tourism and protecting the environment presents ongoing challenges. Rural communities and resource managers face issues such as job creation, wildfire risk, drought, safety, and educating both locals and visitors about responsible natural resource use. Unfortunately, professional training for small guide businesses is often out of reach due to financial or time constraints.
Several organizations are working together to change that. The Oregon Marine Board, Travel Oregon, and Oregon Sea Grant each contribute to strengthening the state’s economy and supporting sustainable tourism by working with professional guides and outfitters.
One key program is the Guide and Outfitter Recognized Professional (GORP) certification, offered by Oregon Sea Grant and Oregon State University Extension. This training helps guides stay informed about current best practices, safety standards, and industry trends.
In 2024, Travel Oregon launched a new initiative to remove barriers to this training. Through a partnership with Oregon Sea Grant, the state began covering costs for guides enrolled in the “Why Guides Program,” making it easier for more guides to receive professional development and certification.
This effort helps ensure that Oregon’s tourism industry grows sustainably while supporting the communities and landscapes that make the state a top destination for outdoor recreation.
