China has witnessed significant growth in both domestic tourism and tourism-related spending during the first quarter of this year.
According to data released by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Wednesday, nearly 1.8 billion domestic trips were made in the first three months of the year, marking a 26.4% increase compared to the same period last year.
Of these trips, about 1.32 billion were taken by urban residents, a 22.4% rise from last year, while 476 million were made by rural residents, a jump of 39.2%.
Tourism-related spending also saw an impressive boost, reaching 1.8 trillion yuan ($250 billion), which is an 18.6% increase from the previous year. Urban residents contributed 1.48 trillion yuan, up 14.8%, while rural residents spent 320 billion yuan, reflecting a 39.6% growth.
