China’s visa-waiver policies continued to drive strong inbound travel during the recently concluded May Day holiday, with the number of foreign visitors entering the country visa-free seeing a notable rise.
According to statistics from the National Immigration Administration, more than 10.89 million cross-border passenger trips were recorded over the five-day holiday, marking a 28.7 percent increase from the previous year.
Of those trips, over 1.11 million were made by foreign nationals, reflecting a 43.1 percent rise compared to the same period last year. Additionally, 380,000 of these foreign entries were made under China’s visa-free policy, which saw a 72.7 percent increase year-on-year.
Domestic travel also saw significant growth. The number of cross-border trips made by residents of mainland China rose by 21.2 percent, while visits by residents from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan increased by 37.1 percent.
To ensure a smooth travel experience, border inspection authorities across the country issued travel forecasts and advisories. They also opened sufficient passageways to facilitate efficient inspection clearance, helping travelers plan their trips more effectively.
