Strong winds and heavy rainfall disrupted both air and sea travel on South Korea’s Jeju Island on Friday, as a low-pressure system moved in from the East China Sea.
The Jeju Meteorological Administration issued heavy rain warnings for the island’s southern and mountainous regions, along with wind warnings for higher elevations. As of 8 a.m., Azalea Field on Mount Halla recorded 80.5 millimeters (3.16 inches) of rain. Other areas saw significant rainfall as well, including 64 mm on the southern mountain wall, 56 mm in Yeongsil and Pyoseon, 19.5 mm in Gujwa, 13.9 mm in Seogwipo, and 3.5 mm in Jeju City.
Winds were particularly strong at high altitudes. Peak gusts reached 33.2 meters per second (74.2 mph) at Samgakbong Peak on Mount Halla. Other gust readings included 23.5 m/s in Sajaebi, 21.3 m/s in Gosan, and 20.1 m/s in Nakseon.
Due to the worsening weather, 19 domestic flights — 10 arrivals and nine departures — were canceled at Jeju International Airport by 8 a.m., according to the Korea Airports Corporation. Ferry services between Jeju and the mainland were also affected, with routes to Wando and Jindo suspended.
