The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji has noticed a significant uptick in the demand for inter – island sea vessels. As a result, it aims to address this issue during the upcoming fiscal year.
Joeli Cawaki, the CEO, revealed that an application has been submitted to secure additional funding in the 2025 – 2026 national budget. This move is to tackle crucial infrastructure problems. Cawaki pointed out that the demand for outer – island tours has surged from one ship per week to three. Currently, the main wharves operate around the clock, yet vessels only have a two – hour window for berthing, unloading, and departure.
Cawaki also emphasized the necessity of expanding ports, especially in Suva and Lautoka, to support international maritime transportation. Moreover, the wharves in Levuka, Nabouwalu, Natovi, and Levuke are in urgent need of major renovations. With the growth of Fiji’s tourism and maritime – related activities, these infrastructure improvements are seen as vital for the country’s economic development and the safety of maritime operations.
