The appearance of a large Chinese tour group at the opening ceremony of the “China – Cambodia Tourism Year” on May 23rd signaled a new phase in bilateral tourism cooperation. Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister On Sem Sovath stated that Cambodia, known as the “Kingdom of Wonders,” is ready to warmly welcome Chinese tourists and investors. The country plans to improve service quality, enrich tourism products, and implement new policies like e – entry and visas to facilitate international visitors.
Tourism is a vital pillar of Cambodia’s economy, contributing about 9.4% to the GDP in 2024. Official data shows that in the first four months of this year, Cambodia received 2.4 million international tourists, a 14% increase year – on – year, with Chinese tourists exceeding 380,000, up 49%.
Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin cited three reasons for choosing Cambodia: its rich and unique tourism resources, the deep – rooted China – Cambodia friendship, and the conveniences brought by the “China – Cambodia Tourism Year.” “Now is the perfect time to visit Cambodia,” he emphasized.
Cambodian officials hope for more direct flights between the two countries. After the resumption of the Wuxi – Sihanoukville direct flight by Ruili Airlines on May 18th, Cambodian airlines are committed to expanding flight routes, strengthening people – to – people exchanges between China and Cambodia.
