Yuxi City has welcomed 13.94 million domestic tourists this year, with its 16 educational tourism bases reporting significant growth in visitors. The Chengjiang Fossil Site Natural History Museum has emerged as a major attraction, surpassing 300,000 visitors since 2023 for both tours and educational programs.
The museum has expanded its offerings with hands-on courses including fossil excavation field experiences, laboratory restoration techniques, and insect specimen preparation. “Even a small fossil takes our skilled staff 2-3 days to restore properly,” said Hou Jing, a museum staff member, acknowledging that their current one-hour restoration workshop provides only a basic introduction for participants.
In Hongta District, 49-year-old Chen Guanglin, a recognized inheritor of Yuxi blue-and-white porcelain techniques, teaches visitors about this intangible cultural heritage. His kiln now receives over 1,000 educational tourism participants annually. Local authorities plan to establish more certified educational bases for traditional skills like porcelain-making and roast duck preparation.
Other popular educational destinations include Tonghai County’s Confucian Temple for classical studies, Huaning County’s pottery village for ceramic workshops, and Yimen County’s wild mushroom museum offering both knowledge and culinary experiences. The city’s culture and tourism bureau is developing additional cultural products and programs to meet growing demand.
