Sydney witnessed a unique cultural exchange on May 31, 2025 as nearly 300 dignitaries gathered for the “Friendship Through Football · Celebrating Dragon Boat Festival” event. The gathering brought together Chinese and Australian government officials, business leaders and community representatives to explore sports as cultural diplomacy while honoring the traditional Chinese festival.
Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian joined Australian Governor-General Samantha Mostyn, Trade and Tourism Minister Don Farrell, and Macquarie Group Australia Chairman Richard Coles in addressing the audience. Ambassador Xiao emphasized the Dragon Boat Festival’s role in facilitating cross-cultural dialogue and expressed China’s willingness to strengthen sports cooperation with Australia’s new administration.
Governor-General Mostyn praised the Chinese community’s contributions to Australia’s multicultural society, while Minister Farrell highlighted recent trade achievements between the nations. Macquarie’s Coles underscored the dual importance of economic ties and cultural respect in bilateral relations.
The event, co-organized by Macquarie Australia, Australia China Business Council, Australian Football League and Sydney Swans, showcased how traditional festivals and sports can serve as platforms for international understanding and cooperation.
