On the early morning of June 2, 2025, local time, Mount Etna, located on the island of Sicily, Italy, erupted with great intensity, marking its most violent eruption in nearly a decade. This iconic and one of the world’s most active stratovolcanoes, standing at an elevation of around 3,323 meters, once again demonstrated the formidable power of nature.
The eruption, which occurred at 3:50 am, startled approximately 40 tourists who were exploring the slopes of the volcano. As the volcano began to spew out large volumes of hot gas, volcanic ash, and molten lava, the tourists had to hastily evacuate to ensure their safety. Witnesses captured the scene of the panicked crowd making their way down the slopes in a hurry.
The eruption was so powerful that the resulting explosions could be heard as far away as Taormina, which is 50 kilometers away, and Catania, 40 kilometers distant. The sound of the blasts added to the sense of urgency and chaos in the area. The volcanic activity sent a towering plume of ash and smoke billowing into the sky, creating a visually spectacular yet terrifying sight.
The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) closely monitors Mount Etna’s activities. Their data shows that the eruption might have been triggered by the partial collapse of the volcano’s crater, leading to strong Strombolian – type explosions and lava fountains. Although the lava flows mainly remained within the natural boundaries of the volcano, the sudden and intense eruption still had a significant impact on the local tourism activities.
The nearby Catania Airport, which is crucial for tourism in the region, was put on high alert. However, due to favorable wind directions, the airport managed to remain operational for the time being, though authorities continued to closely monitor the situation in case the volcanic ash cloud might pose a threat to air traffic.
Mount Etna’s frequent eruptions, while a natural wonder, also serve as a reminder of the need for proper safety precautions and emergency response plans for both tourists and local residents. Despite the risks, its dramatic displays continue to draw adventurous travelers from around the world, making it a double – edged sword for the local tourism industry.
