The “Hello China” hot air balloon became a star attraction at this year’s Waikato Balloon Festival in Hamilton, New Zealand, according to the Auckland China Cultural Center. Among more than 20 colorful balloons that painted the skies, the China-themed installation drew particular attention from over 100,000 spectators during the annual event.
Weather permitting, participating balloons launched at dawn each festival day. The “Hello China” crew distinguished themselves by wearing special cultural T-shirts and chanting the “Hello China” slogan before igniting their burner. This vibrant display formed part of China’s international tourism promotion campaign in key overseas markets.
The Waikato region, located in New Zealand’s North Island, derives its name from the winding Waikato River. Known for its diverse culture and breathtaking landscapes, the area gained global fame as filming location for the “Middle-earth” fantasy films. Hamilton, the region’s largest city, attracts numerous visitors to its renowned Hamilton Gardens.
Event organizers noted the China-themed balloon’s participation marked growing cultural exchanges between the two nations. The Auckland China Cultural Center reported strong public engagement, with many festival-goers photographing the distinctive balloon and inquiring about travel opportunities to China.
This successful appearance follows China’s broader strategy to revitalize international tourism post-pandemic. The eye-catching balloon promotion coincides with China’s recent visa policy relaxations for several countries, including New Zealand, as part of efforts to rebuild global travel connections.
