As popular Indian states struggle with overtourism, many travelers are looking for quieter, less crowded places to visit. Mizoram, a hidden gem in northeast India, is quickly rising as a favorite spot for both Indian and international tourists.
Mizoram’s tourism has surged by 114% during the financial year 2024–2025. Once overlooked, the state is now attracting much more attention from travelers.
By February 2025, Mizoram welcomed 469,753 tourists — more than double the 219,114 visitors recorded in 2023–2024. Most visitors, about 464,742, were from within India. Over 5,000 international tourists came from more than 80 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, China, Japan, and Germany. Officials expect the total number for the full year 2025 to continue this strong growth.
For context, Mizoram’s tourism was badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with only 20,564 visitors in 2020–21. Since then, the numbers have steadily recovered: 132,000 visitors in 2021–22, 222,226 in 2022–23, and now a rapid rise in 2024–25.
This growing popularity shows that more travelers are choosing Mizoram for its unique appeal and peaceful environment.
