Early summer transforms Huangdu Town’s Dazhu Village into a golden wonderland as thousands of firethorn pear blossoms blanket the mountainsides. At Wen Laihong’s 200-acre plantation, the vibrant yellow-white flowers attract swarms of busy bees under the sunshine. “This spectacular bloom foretells another bumper harvest,” beams Wen, inspecting the flourishing firethorn pear trees.
The visionary farmer has pioneered an innovative agroforestry system, interplanting firethorn pears with medicinal peucedanum roots. The arrangement creates perfect symbiosis – the pear trees’ wide spacing accommodates the shade-loving herbs below, while the three-year wait for pear fruit production is offset by annual peucedanum harvests. “This dual-cropping system maximizes land use while minimizing market risks,” explains Wen.
Both crops promise strong commercial potential. Firethorn pears, packed with vitamin C, can be processed into juices, preserves and health products. Peucedanum roots maintain steady demand in traditional Chinese medicine markets. Wen plans expansion into value-added processing while helping neighbors adopt this model through technical guidance and guaranteed purchases.
Huangdu Town’s strategic shift toward specialty cultivation continues bearing fruit. The firethorn-peucedanum intercropping innovation exemplifies Guizhou’s agricultural modernization drive, charting a distinctive path toward rural prosperity through ecological farming practices and industrial diversification.
