Visitors to Wenquan County in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region can now explore a specialized cold-water fish park featuring diverse species including golden trout and peled (Coregonus peled), while enjoying both the picturesque Sayram Lake and its culinary offerings.
The lake’s thriving fishery traces its origins to 1998 when local aquaculture authorities introduced peled, a cold-water species from Russia. A successful breeding experiment two years later marked a turning point in Sayram’s fishery development.
Today, the Cold-Water Fish Park, invested by Xihu Fishery Company – one of China’s largest peled exporters – allows visitors to learn about the region’s fishing history and observe various fish species.
“Our fish reach restaurants in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai within 24 hours of being caught,” said Bi Fuyang, assistant general manager of the company. The firm also collaborates with universities nationwide to research cold-water fish breeding technologies.
