On May 27, 2025, the U.S. Department of State issued its highest-level travel warning for Venezuela.
The alert strongly advises all U.S. citizens not to travel to Venezuela for any reason. Those currently in the country are urged to leave immediately. The warning also recommends avoiding all borders with Colombia, Brazil, and Guyana.
The State Department cited serious dangers for Americans, including wrongful detention, torture, terrorism, kidnapping, unpredictable local law enforcement, crime, civil unrest, and poor healthcare facilities.
Currently, more U.S. nationals are wrongfully detained in Venezuela than in any other country. The warning also notes that other foreign nationals face similar risks of unjust detention.
There is no U.S. embassy or consulate operating in Venezuela. As a result, the U.S. government cannot provide regular or emergency consular services to its citizens inside the country.
