20th Wenjin Book Awards Celebrate China’s Finest Publications

by jingji15

The National Library of China unveiled the 20th Wenjin Book Awards during World Book Day celebrations, selecting 20 winning titles and 46 nominated works from a record 2,800 submissions. This year’s honored publications span diverse subjects from Dunhuang studies to China’s nuclear development history, with Zeng Xiaolian’s natural history autobiography “As It Is” standing out among social science winners.

The 86-year-old botanical artist expressed delight that his memoir has inspired young readers to explore nature illustration. Since its 2004 establishment, the Wenjin Awards have chronicled China’s cultural evolution while maintaining rigorous selection standards. This anniversary edition introduced a special “Classics Revisited” category, reintroducing past winners like “City Memories” and “A Short History of Nearly Everything.”

Complementing the awards, the National Library launched a 20-year retrospective exhibition featuring physical books with original reviews in a dedicated reading area. To enhance accessibility, digital reading zones now offer over 200 award-winning book chapters through official platforms. The China Library Association will further promote these literary works through nationwide library exhibitions and online campaigns.
