China’s nighttime economy is experiencing unprecedented growth, with projected nighttime tourism expenditure reaching 1.91 trillion yuan in 2024 – a 21.7% year-on-year increase according to the 2024 China Nighttime Economy Development Report released at a recent Shenzhen forum. The “golden four hours” between 18:00-22:00 have become peak activity periods, with National Day holiday nighttime visitor numbers surging 33.2%.
From Night Markets to Cultural Immersion
The report reveals a paradigm shift in nighttime experiences, moving beyond simple nightscape viewing to multidimensional cultural engagement. Popular activities now include:
- Light wellness and healing experiences incorporating local traditions
- Cultural exhibitions and performances in public spaces
- Night visits to botanical gardens and zoos
- Urban night walking tours
- Vibrant food night markets and artisan bazaars
“Night tourism has evolved from supplementary attraction to core destination experience,” said Dai Bin, director of China Tourism Academy. “It now forms an integral part of China’s distinctive tourism ecosystem.”
Supply-Side Innovation Expands Boundaries
The nighttime economy boom has driven remarkable infrastructure development:
Futian District exemplifies successful implementation, where nighttime activities generate over 60% of its 240 billion yuan retail sales. The district’s signature skyscraper light show across 43 buildings has become mandatory viewing for Shenzhen visitors.Cultural Depth: The Next FrontierWhile basic nighttime entertainment needs are met, the report identifies challenges of homogenization in night markets and performances. “We need cultural innovation that combines modernity with authentic local character,” Dai emphasized. Successful models like Xi’an’s Song of Everlasting Sorrow and Qingdao’s Rhythms of the Sea demonstrate how integrated cultural performances can create distinctive nighttime experiences. The path forward includes:
- Extending hours at cultural institutions
- Developing intimate cultural spaces
- Cultivating world-class tourism enterprises
- Creating culturally distinctive tourism zones
“Night tourism isn’t just about snacks and light shows,” Dai concluded. “It’s about expressing cultural confidence through experiences that educate while they entertain, blending tradition with contemporary creativity.”
