In recent months, Japan’s tourism industry has faced an unexpected setback. A prophecy that a devastating earthquake will strike Japan on July 5 has been spreading wildly on social media platforms. Since around February this year, bookings for trips to Japan have stagnated, and many foreign tourists have canceled their travel plans.
The prophecy, which claims that a large – scale earthquake will lead to the disappearance of one – third of Japan’s territory, has triggered widespread concern among international travelers. Social media has been abuzz with discussions about this doomsday – like prediction, with the number of related videos on some platforms exceeding 1,400 and total views surpassing 100 million.
In response, the Japanese government and experts have stepped in to debunk the rumor. They firmly state that there is no scientific evidence to support this prophecy. The Japan Meteorological Agency also reiterated on its official website that “generally, claims that can clearly predict the time and location of an earthquake are mostly rumors.”
The tourism industry in Japan, which has been gradually recovering, is now being hit hard by these unfounded rumors. The Japanese government and tourism – related sectors hope that the public, especially potential tourists, can view the situation rationally and not be misled by such baseless claims, so as to restore the vitality of the tourism market.
