According to the international travel information website Travel Daily News, film – location tourism has emerged as the core driver of growth in Greece’s tourism industry. Data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority in 2024 shows that this sector has spurred a 17% year – on – year increase in tourism revenue and attracted over 2.3 million tourists with a focus on film – related themes.
To boost the film industry, the Greek government has rolled out tax incentives and cash – back programs, covering up to 40% of production costs. Over the past four years, these policies have lured 176 film and TV projects to Greece. Among them is the Hollywood blockbuster “Odyssey”, with an investment as high as £250 million.
Official statistics indicate that these projects have directly created approximately 44,000 jobs. In 2023, the film and TV production industry generated direct revenues of €264.1 million, and the total earnings of related industries exceeded €394.7 million. In 2024, the Greek Ministry of Culture established the EKKOMED Creative Greece center, effectively creating a closed – loop industrial chain of “filming – tourism attraction – cultural export”.
Take the movie “Mamma Mia!” as an example. Since it was filmed on Skopelos and Skiathos islands in 2008, the number of tourists visiting these islands has tripled. On average, each tourist spends €250 per day on travel, accommodation, and dining, significantly driving the development of local tourism services and related industries. The derived musical from the movie has attracted 70 million viewers during its global tours, further strengthening the international popularity of Greek island tourism.
This film – location tourism trend not only enriches Greece’s tourism products but also promotes cultural exchanges and economic development, making Greece a more appealing destination on the global tourism map.
