Japanese police are searching for a knife – wielding attacker who injured a Chinese tourist in Kyoto on June 6, according to a report by Guancha.cn. The 37 – year – old victim, a Chinese national on a sightseeing tour, was slashed on the right shoulder near the Gojō Bridge promenade in Shimogyō – ku at approximately 8 pm local time.
Witnesses said the assailant fled immediately after the attack. The victim, part of a 20 – person tour group, stated he did not know the attacker and the altercation stemmed from an unspecified dispute. Kyoto Prefectural Police have classified the incident as attempted murder and are prioritizing the suspect’s apprehension.
“The victim was walking with his tour group when the incident occurred,” a police spokesperson said. “We are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to identify the perpetrator.” The injured man was treated at a local hospital and is in stable condition.
This marks the first reported violent attack targeting Chinese tourists in Kyoto this year. The city typically sees over 1.5 million Chinese visitors annually, drawn to its historical sites like Kiyomizu – dera Temple and Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. Tour operators have expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing that such cases remain rare in Japan.
Kyoto’s tourism bureau released a statement reassuring visitors of their safety, noting that local police have increased patrols in tourist – heavy areas. The Chinese Embassy in Japan has been notified and is assisting the victim, urging travelers to remain vigilant and report any concerns to authorities.
Investigators are focusing on whether the attack was random or motivated by a specific conflict, as the victim provided no prior history with the assailant. The case highlights the need for enhanced security measures in popular tourist zones, especially during peak travel seasons.
