Earlier this week, a well-known restaurant in San Ignacio, located in the Cayo District, raised concerns on social media about low customer traffic. Despite official reports showing an increase in tourism, the restaurant said they have not seen more visitors this season.
Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler responded, confirming that tourism has grown by 1% in the first five months of the year. However, he admitted the growth has been small and that recent months have been slower than expected.
“May was a bit soft, and I think the next couple of months will be difficult,” Mahler said. “We’re doing everything we can to prevent a drop in visitor numbers.”
Mahler explained that global uncertainty is affecting tourism in many countries. He noted that people are spending less on travel because their personal finances have taken a hit—particularly retirement savings like 401(k)s.
“People just don’t have the extra money right now to spend on luxury vacations like what Belize offers,” he said.
