As China becomes more accessible and attractive to international visitors, a growing number of overseas travelers are choosing to combine tourism with shopping in the country. Shenzhen’s ports have seen a sustained surge in passenger traffic this year, with foreign tourists eager to indulge in shopping sprees. In the first five months of 2025, the passenger flow on international and regional routes at Shenzhen Airport reached 2.56 million, a year-on-year increase of about 33%. At the airport, foreign tourists carrying large amounts of shopping luggage are a common sight.
“I love this city. It’s modern, with delicious food, great shopping, and excellent service. Shopping in Shenzhen is very convenient,” said a Russian tourist. Shenzhen’s local brand electronic products and affordable gold and jewelry are particularly popular among foreign tourists and buyers. “I’m looking at rings, bracelets, and gold—some as gifts, some to sell in the U.S. Shenzhen has high-tech electronics and jewelry,” said an American purchaser.
Zhang Dou, a staff member at the DJI store in Shenzhen MixC, noted, “Most customers come to our store with a strong intention to buy, and the order rate is basically 70%.”
Shenzhen’s ports have maintained a high volume of passenger traffic throughout the year. As of May 19, 2025, the number of entry-exit personnel inspected by the Shenzhen Immigration Checkpoint Station has exceeded 100 million, reaching this milestone 24 days earlier than in 2024. The combination of tourism and shopping in Shenzhen not only showcases the city’s modern charm and commercial vitality but also highlights China’s growing appeal as a top destination for international travelers.
