The crisis stems from political tensions and a “hostile atmosphere,” driving travelers away. Canadians, once America’s top visitors, now favor domestic destinations like Halifax; European and Asian tourists cite visa fears and unwelcoming rhetoric. “The US is seen as ‘troublesome’ rather than ‘free’,” says a NYC tour guide, whose business dropped 40%.
Rivals like Canada, Japan, and China—with its visa-free policies—are capitalizing, promoting open hospitality. Meanwhile, the 2028 LA Olympics face uncertainty: travel bans affecting 12 nations, including Iranian athletes, raise doubts about event integrity. Social unrest also threatens safety and visitor turnout, despite organizers’ assurances.
“Tourism is about feeling welcome,” notes a travel analyst. “Until that changes, the US risks permanent damage to its global image—and economy.”
